Blog Tour and Giveaway: COGLING by Jordan Elizabeth

COGLING
Young Adult Steampunk-Fantasy

The beautiful cover is thanks to Mandie Manzano.

When fifteen-year-old Edna Mather tears an expensive and unfamiliar pocket watch off her little brother's neck, he crumbles into a pile of cogs right before her eyes. Horrified, Edna flees for help, but encounters Ike, a thief who attempts to steal the watch before he realizes what it is: a device to power Coglings—clockwork changelings left in place of stolen children who have been forced to work in factories.

Desperate to rescue her brother, Edna sets off across the kingdom to the hags' swamp, with Ike in tow. There, they learn Coglings are also replacing nobility so the hags can stage a rebellion and rule over humanity. Edna and Ike must stop the revolt, but the populace believes hags are helpful godmothers and healers. No one wants to believe a lowly servant and a thief, especially when Ike has secrets that label them both as traitors.

Together, Edna and Ike must make the kingdom trust them or stop the hags themselves, even if Ike is forced to embrace his dark heritage and Edna must surrender her family.

Excerpt:

Green smoke snaked up the side of the tenement and drifted over the sill of an open window. A breeze blew the vapor into a column before it solidified into the shape of a stout, young hag. She shook her crimson curls away from her face and straightened the hood of her cloak to keep her kohl-lined, silver eyes shadowed.

The scent of lavender clung to her robes, washing over the small room. Two brass-framed beds crowded the floor. Blankets covered sleeping children. A little boy wheezed against the head of his stuffed bear, drool dripping onto the wool.

The hag squinted to see the goldenrod dream cloud above his head—a dream about seeing his father again. She frowned at the other bed, where a sleeping teenager lay with a threadbare blanket tugged around her chin. Even squinting, the hag couldn’t make out a dream cloud. The girl was too old to be of any use.

The hag slithered to the boy’s bed and, from the folds of her cloak, drew out a rectangular box four inches long, with a circular indentation on one side. She set it on the floor to remove a vial and rag from her skirt pocket, the rough wool of the rag irritating her fingertips.

“Do it, Simone,” the hag muttered to herself as she willed her hands not to tremble. “Make the Dark Mother happy.” She couldn’t fail at her first mission.

Holding her breath, Simone dribbled three drops onto the rag, yanked the teddy bear away, and shoved the drugged cloth against the boy’s mouth. His eyes opened, his gasp muffled, and his body jerked. Simone stiffened.

The girl moaned. Her mattress rustled as she rolled over to face the wall, brown curls shifting over her pillow.

Simone’s heart thudded. By the seven Saints, she should’ve cast a sleeping spell over the girl. The Dark Mother preferred humans to think hags were harmless healers, not thieves who kidnapped children.

The boy writhed, squeaks emerging from behind the rag. Simone pressed harder. She needed his breath in the wool to disguise and fuel the machine.

The potion took hold and the boy collapsed. Simone’s thick lips curved over her broken teeth. She lifted a pocket watch from around her neck and positioned it into the crevice in the metal box. As the two pieces connected, a chime rang out. She set the box beside the limp little boy and draped the rag over it. Even though she should wait to make sure his breath stuck in the machine, she couldn’t risk waking the girl.

The metal stretched to become his replica as if it were made of putty. With a second chime, the metal shimmered and dulled into the pale peach of his flesh, becoming an exact duplicate of the child.

“Mine.” Simone hefted the little boy into her arms, leaving the duplication on the bed, and transformed to smoke before the chimes awoke the girl.

COGLING has already gained advanced praise from NY Times Bestselling author Maria V. Snyder!
“This is a fun YA Steampunk novel. It's very different than many other Steampunk stories I've read. Basic plot is Edna's brother is kidnapped by hags and replaced with a "cogling" and she's on a mission to find and rescue her brother. The world is a Victorian-era with a strict class system for the humans and for those with magic. The woman with magic are called hags and the men with magic are orges and they're not nice and are planning to change the system. I really enjoyed learning about the world and the characters are well drawn and engaging.”

Book Spotlight, Excerpt and Amazon / Paypal Giveaway: The Kingdom on the Edge of Reality by Gahan Hanmer

The Kingdom on the Edge of Reality
by Gahan Hanmer

Paperback: 360 pages
Publisher: Two Harbors Press
Language: English
ISBN-10: 937293645
ISBN-13: 978-1937293642
Genre: Fantasy, Action, Adventure

About the book:

Welcome to Albert Keane’s beautifully designed medieval kingdom nestled in a completely isolated river valley in the Canadian wilderness. Peaceful, happy, and prosperous, it takes nothing from the modern world, not so much as a single clock.

There is a castle, of course, and a monastery. There is even a pitch dark, rat-infested dungeon – because you simply have to have one if you are trying a rule a feudal kingdom!

Farmers work the land, artisans ply their trades, monks keep school and visit the sick, and nobody (well, almost nobody) misses the modern world at all.

So why has Jack Darcey – actor, wanderer, ex-competitive fencer – been tricked and seduced into paying a visit? And why hasn’t anyone told him that the only way to leave is a perilous trek across hundreds of miles of trackless wilderness without a compass or a map?

Because a tide of fear and violence is rising from the twisted ambitions of one of King Albert’s nobles, and Albert’s fortune teller believes that Jack could turn the tide – if he lives long enough.
Seamlessly blending medieval and modern elements, The Kingdom on the Edge of Reality serves up a heady brew of action, humor, romance and satire in a kingdom set apart in time and space where reality is the dealer’s choice.

About the Author

Born into a family of actors and painters, Gahan Hanmer naturally gravitated toward the arts. As a youth, he was not an exceptional student or much of an athlete, but he received
satisfaction and appreciation from the work he did on the stage, which began when he was eight years old. Under the guidance of his uncle actor Marlon Brando, Gahan developed his talent exclusively as a theater artist, working with many inspired teachers and directors.

In the classical theater Gahan played soldiers, princes, kings and gods, along with beggars, villains, criminals and madmen. Trained in the Stanislavski ‘method’, living truly in the skins and minds of these characters, he absorbed what each of them had to teach him. But life in the theater is a kind of sacrifice; there is little or no money in it. He left the theater and came back to it many times. He wandered, stumbling through life, searching for he wasn’t sure what, supporting himself in a variety of occupations. The real world was his teacher then.

Later in life, when he had outgrown his need for the world of the theater and began living a more normal life, he began to try to organize some of what life had taught him in a novel of romance and adventure. Every night, after his two daughters were in bed, he became the main character in a perilous mythical journey and recorded it as it unfolded in his imagination. Years later, rewritten and revised many times and finally pruned and polished, the result was The Kingdom on the Edge of Reality.

Excerpt

It is very difficult to think while you are galloping, especially over rough terrain. Why was I chasing her? I didn’t know. What did I expect to achieve? I didn’t care. I was just a crazy centaur chasing another crazy centaur across the crags of the timeless past.

I chased her across the meadow, but she disappeared down another trail. I chased her down the trail and saw her plunge into the trees. I chased her through the trees, and when she splashed across a stream I splashed after her. Now we were back at the meadow, and I chased her in the opposite direction. We were both wet from the stream and whiplashed from the branches. Was she planning to go streaking through the auction?

No, she veered onto the trail toward the waterfall, and suddenly I was gripped with fear. It was not a good place to be reckless. The trail there turned into a twisty and steep dirt road that switchbacked down through a narrow canyon to the bridge in front of the waterfall. I knew it well, for it had made a hair-raising course for a Flexible Flyer when the snow was deep. On a galloping horse it would be suicide.

“Jenna, don’t! Jenna, no!” I knew it was too late. At the top of the grade, I reined in sharply and looked down. Her horse was out of control. It was too steep to stop, and she would never make the last turn before the road curved down to the bridge. Far below were the big boulders of the streambed.

Someone was screaming now. Was it me? No, it was Jenna screaming at her horse, screaming Cassie up to top speed, lashing the animal with her voice. She was lying low on the withers, one hand tangled tight in Cassie’s mane, the other arm gripping the horse’s neck. Suddenly I saw what she had in mind.

On the other side of the canyon the road jutted out from the hill. Jenna was going to try to make it across the gorge. It was all up to the horse now. I saw Cassie break a quarter stride as she measured the distance. She knew what she had to do to survive.

Please God give that horse wings, please God don’t let her fall, please God, oh please God, please! The horse was in midair now, straining every nerve, the forelegs reaching out, the hind legs tucking up, all time compressed into one second, one beat of my heart. Now a rasp of rocks spun out into the gorge as the hooves found a few inches of purchase on the other side. Cassie was stumbling, went almost to her knees, caught herself and stood up straight, stamping in the road. Jenna was still lying flat against the horse’s spine, her hand tangled in its mane.

Slowly she sat up, slowly she rolled a leg over and slid to the ground. Dropping to the grass, she wrapped her head up in her arms.

When my heart stopped pounding so desperately, I rode the short way back to the meadow and retrieved Jenna’s clothes. Then I picked my way along the road past the bridge, and tied Pollux up near Cassie. Jenna accepted the clothes and pulled them on without comment or coyness.

“I’m sorry if I frightened you,” she said finally. She seemed annoyed with herself.

“I’m glad you’re all right, Jenna.”
“I have to do things like that. I can’t help it.” “You did that on purpose?”

“Well, no, of course not. But throwing my clothes off, behaving wildly . . . It’s just that life gets so boring sometimes, don’t you think? And when you try to liven it up, things often end badly. Why is that?”

“I don’t know, Jenna. I don’t know anything about life, except that it’s easy to get it all screwed up, even with the best intentions.”

“Do you think I’m crazy?”

“Oh, yes.”

It was not the answer she was expecting. “Oh? Well, I’m sorry I asked.”

“I think everybody’s crazy. I don’t see any way around it.”

“But you don’t think badly of me?”

Blog Tour: The Art & Science of Healing with LIGHT by Dr. Mark J. Rogers and Nike Azovas

The Art & Science of Healing with LIGHT

2015 has been declared the International Year of Light by the United Nations. The association regularly conducts meaningful observances, it is also the Year of Soils. Last year was the Year of Crystallography, the Year of Youth and so on, but it was most insightful of them to select Light and therefore pay homage to the natural phenomenon without which life could not exist.

Within my general practice clinic over the last fifteen years we have been using light, specifically laser-light, to heal patients with chronic pain. Initially I was a voice in the wilderness about how light accelerates the healing processes of the body, and at times it still appears to be the case as mainstream medicine is slow to take up the wonders of healing by light. It is easier and more profitable to write a prescription.

Current standard medical treatments of physical therapies and medication actually worsen chronic pain, thereby locking the patients into a life sentence.

It is Light that releases the patients from that life sentence by removing the mystery from chronic pain and illuminating its true origins. Clinical application of Light to pain afflicted areas of the body causes the cells to respond in a way that reduces inflammation and encourages blood flow. This means the injured cells receive revitalising oxygen and can heal.

Chronic pain is not a disease, it is not genetic, and it is not all in the mind. It is a very real physical condition and the path to its healing is found through applying the logic of the Science of our biology.

Light has always been a herald and in the case of pain medicine I believe it heralds in a long overdue medical revolution where the patients are in finally in control of their own bodies.

Hippocrates thought that it a privilege to be a doctor, one must ‘Do Good – and Do No Harm’, and serve the patient. Yet in today’s world doctors are the privileged ones and the patients serve them, and are being harmed. When the Science of Light is more incorporated into mainstream medicine the mysteries of pain will melt away and healing will become a more inclusive and natural procedure.

About the book:

Chronic pain has reached epidemic proportions but it is not a disease. Chronic pain is a genuine physical problem and its epidemic is being spread by the very treatments the doctors are prescribing. Over thirty percent of patients across the world present with back, neck, or head pain, the majority of whom are in chronic pain, but all doctors offer is a prescription for painkillers and a referral for intensive physical therapy. The patients never improve, in fact they get worse. Instead of receiving empathy and understanding they are often accused of being dishonest about the severity of their pain. Some are even sent for psychotherapy. 'The Art and Science of Healing - with Light' breaks that vicious cycle. Within it is explained to patients how they developed chronic pain in the first place and how to begin to heal their migraines, back pain, neck pain, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and all forms of chronic pain in general.

Doctor Mark Rogers bases the healing process on his 7 Principles of Healing Chronic Pain. His methods are all based in science, are common sense, pain free, drug free, have no painful exercises, and no 'mind over matter' meditations for coping because the problem is not in the mind of the patients, it is in their bodies at a deep cellular level. The 7 Principles have a conservative efficacy of eighty-five percent. As long as the Principles are followed the patient will heal. It is the medical system that is keeping patients in pain through ignoring the origin of the pain. Pain is not a mystery, it is not a disease, it means you are being hurt. Chronic pain means you are still being hurt. Written in a clear easy to read style with minimal medical jargon it is designed for patients to finally give them understand what happened to them and gain control over their healing processes so they can start healing today.

Book Excerpt:

‘Those who do nothing are inviting shame …(as well as violence). Those who act boldly are recognizing right as well as reality.’  John F Kennedy, 11th June 1963 Address to the American People on Civil Rights

‘The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.’   Albert Einstein

The purpose of this book is to enlighten patients about how they developed chronic pain and how it can be healed. There is no mystery, no mind over matter and in the majority of cases, no medications. The solution is a powerful blend of Nature and Science that is presented in a set of 7 common sense Principles that, when applied correctly, activate and assist the healing processes within the human body.

Patients feel frustrated that in a time where scientific research has brought about many advances in curing diseases, keeping our organs in good health and extending life expectancy, most doctors still can’t fix a bad back or tell you the real reason you get migraines or that permanent ringing in your ears. This book explains why.

The book is in three parts. In Part 1 I introduce the 7 Principles of healing chronic pain. Through them it is explained why chronic pain develops and how the normal processes the body should be carrying out to battle it are actually being inhibited by common mainstream medical practices.

I explain that chronic pain is widespread chronic inflammation, and in the chronic pain patient that inflammation is being exacerbated by the very medical treatments the doctors are prescribing. The more medical treatments the patients have, the worse they get. The result is a very sick patient. The doctors are following established, and unquestioned, guidelines so therefore it must be the patient who is at fault. A vicious downward spiral is created and it is the patient who pays the price in every way.

I have also chosen to include a little of my own story. This was not my original intent but as the book developed it soon became clear that some of my personal history was relevant to my medical work and findings on the treatment of pain.

There is nothing more personal than pain. I was once a chronic pain patient and the search for my own cure led me down an extraordinary path. I share that experience in the interest of revealing how current medical systems for pain treatment are not only ineffective but also defective, to the point where one might begin to feel it’s deliberate.

I am aware my personal story might be of no interest to some readers so I encourage them to feel free to skip the part about me which is in Chapter 1 under the sub-heading of ‘My Personal Experience with Chronic Pain and How I Healed’. After that I talk about the importance of doctors applying science in the art of medicine. I have strong opinions about it but again the reader might prefer to skip over it and go straight to reading about the 7 Principles. Within them I provide an understanding of the importance of cellular health and how chronic pain patients lost theirs.

You will be introduced to Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). I have developed my knowledge in laser therapy over the last fifteen years. LLLT is also known as cold laser therapy. This is different to the high intensity lasers used in surgery. Cold laser does not cut and is cool to the touch.

While there is much about laser within this book it is not about laser. Don’t feel that because you don’t have anyone near you offering cold laser therapy that you are unable to be helped. This book was designed to guide you through learning all about healing your pain, with or without laser.

I make it clear that Laser is not a panacea. If used alone, without applying the 7 Principles, it will not completely cure your pain. Use the 7 Principles alone and you will heal, slower. Laser and the Principles will accelerate the healing. The combination of the two, Art and Science, works rapid wonders.

You will learn that the adherence to the 7 Principles with or without the scientific application of cold laser therapy will reverse the damage caused to your cells and rejuvenate them to their normal state of full pain-free health. You will become a whole new person, physically and mentally.

Throughout the course of this book it might appear that some forms of physical therapy are being singled out as ineffective. I am vehement that when it comes to chronic pain, they are not only ineffective but dangerous. One of the things the patient will learn is that the so-called strengthening and stretching exercises of physical therapies are a big part of the problem. Most worsen the pain by irritating its source.

Physical therapies have their place, especially in rehabilitation after the pain has healed, but definitely not while it is still present. It will be recommended that physical therapies be discontinued for the duration of the healing process. Once a pain-free state is achieved the patient can return to physical therapies, but only then. Patients will be educated as to why this is the case so they can decide their own course of action.

In Part 2 we discuss the individual conditions. You will learn some facts that will challenge old thinking such as, migraine is a type of neuralgia, and tinnitus is not really a noise, it is a phantom noise. You will also get to meet some of my patients who kindly agreed to be case studies.

Their stories will inspire you, and some of them don’t hold back about how angry they feel towards the current medical system and how it kept them sick, in some cases for decades. Also included are the patients most frequently asked questions.

Part 3 is how to incorporate the 7 Principles into daily activities including sleep, exercise, and even intimacy. Medicine must put the patient first and incorporate more Science instead of blindly following draconian protocols designed purely for legal protection and financial benefit for doctors. When more Science such as LLLT becomes a part of mainstream medicine the benefits to all aspects of society will far outnumber any initial introductory inconveniences to the medical establishment.

There will be less reliance on pharmaceuticals. Insurance claims will resolve much easier, the workplace will be safer, and recovery from all accidents will be faster. Laser is invaluable for healing chronic pain quickly but it is also is an effective modality for preventative medicine. When mainstream medicine incorporates more Science there will be many changes in the way we heal. Chronic pain could soon become a thing of the past.

Chronic pain has long been considered to be an uncontrollable mystery condition. It has been grandly labeled as a complex biopsychosocial condition. Some doctors even consider it to be an incurable disease; others claim it is a result of the patient’s neuroticism. No wonder the patient is confused. The confusion ends now.

Your pain is real and it has a traceable origin. My methods locate that origin, that bull’s-eye, and the laser targets it, fills it with healing light and the body does the rest. The Principles, and the laser, are perfectly safe, pain free, and so simple they are revolutionary. The chronic pain sufferer will finally be able to get off the medical merry-go-round. When mainstream medicine stops disguising its fear of change by shunning cold laser therapy and instead embraces it, in doing so it will enter a new phase of sophisticated and inclusive patient care. Get ready for a long overdue medical revolution.
