Recommended Read: It's Nothing Personal by Kate O'Reilley

It's Nothing Personal
by Kate O'Reilley

Amazon Ratings: 63%

About the book:

On a chilly January morning, anesthesiologist Dr. Jenna Reiner made her daily drive to St. Augustine Hospital, completely unaware that her life was about to change forever. One of the surgical technicians has been stealing syringes and infecting patients with hepatitis C. The battle against the thieving surgical technician was only the beginning. Jenna Reiner was about to begin the fight of her life -- the fight for her reputation, her pride, and her sanity. Beautifully composed, and inspired by true events, "It's Nothing Personal" is a riveting, suspenseful, and emotional thriller which chronicles the story of faith and fortitude when an innocent woman finds herself surrounded by corruption and greed.

Book Review (originally posted on March 2013)

Situation: You badly needed a surgery because there is something wrong in you that needs to be corrected so you entered the operating room (OR), trusted your doctor and the hospital only to find out one illness is gone but somehow in the middle of the surgery process, you acquired a new life-long, deadly disease/infection. What would you do?

In It's Nothing Personal (based on true events), one of Dr. Jenna Reiner's patients got infected by Hepatitis C after the surgery. It was actually a cosmetic surgery, a bust lift. Imagine, the girl only wanted to improve her appearance but she ended up having that life-long/deadly disease. The infection came from a used syringe infected with Hep C by one of the scrub technicians Dr. Reiner trusted. Apparently, this scrub technician is a druggie and she's addicted to Fentanyl. So before every surgery, the scrub technician steals Fentanyl in a syringe and then substitutes one used and infected with Hepatitis  C syringe filled with saline in the anesthesia cart. Dr. Reiner wouldn't know about the switch because both Fentanyl and saline look the same.

Okay, let's talk about the trust issues (only one of the many issues discussed in the book). It's a fact, doctors trust staff in the OR, because doctors trust the hospital who hired the OR people. Even I trust those OR people not because I know them personally but because I trust my doctor and the hospital. Even after reading this, I can't decide on the trust issues. It's been three days since I started writing this and yet I still can't finish the review. Oh well, I am about to see my doctor (my OB doctor of 7 years) today for a yearly check-up and maybe I'll ask her something so I can finally stop thinking about this!

Back to the book, the story flowed smoothly. It's like being told by a friend or someone I knew so I just kept on flipping the pages. Every page is interesting at the same time frightening. The protocol for every operation was discussed and I was shocked that the hospital didn't have a clear cut rules on the safekeeping part. I'm not going to say who is at fault, readers of this book can decide for themselves.

There were too many memorable LOL moments in the question and answer portion (deposition). The questions were mostly brutal but Dr. Reiner handled it pretty well, the answers were intellectually funny. I've worked in two law firms for 10 straight years but never had the chance to be in an actual hearing, only read the hearing transcripts and there are some amusing lines from the defendants like this one. The story has too many interesting facts like the first medical thriller (Morton's Fork) I've read the other month. I really liked Dr. Reiner and her husband. His undying love and support to her made me cry at times. The book did not disappoint. I'm sure your money is well-spent on this one.

Recommended Read: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Anna and the French Kiss
by Stephanie Perkins

Amazon Ratings - 70%

About the book:

Anna was looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more.  So she's less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris-until she meets Etienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, beautiful, Etienne has it all . . . including a serious girlfriend.

But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true.  Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?

Stephanie Perkins keeps the romantic tension crackling and the attraction high in a debut guaranteed to make toes tingle and hearts melt.

Book Review (originally posted on April 2013)

It's definitely 5-star for Anna and the French Kiss! Loved this book... SO. MUCH. I initially thought it was a bit teen-ish, that the story is superficial with the teen love being the center of the story. Glad that it was more than that.

Anna Oliphant believes she's living a perfect life in Atlanta. She has Bridge, the coolest best friend ever and recently, she met the guy of her dreams, Toph. They're almost in a relationship but the romance was cut short because Anna's father, the award-winning novelist, wanted to flaunt his wealth by shipping her off to one of the best boarding schools in Paris. Instead of getting excited, Anna hated it. She doesn't want to leave her old school, not interested in meeting new friends and the fact that she will leave her 3 y.o. brother ... oh she hates her father!

On her first night in Paris, she met Meredith. She seemed cool but when she started talking about her other friends, she didn't think she'd fit with them. She still felt alone and miserable until she met Etienne St. Clair, an English/American guy with an attractive English and French accent. She's falling in love with Etienne but she can't let him know as he's already taken.

Oh, Etienne St. Clair. Eh-t-yen.... Eh-t-yen. . . You'd go completely gaga over him. Beautiful boy, sweet, charming and the way the author describes the accent - perfect! I also love that this is a French-themed book. I immensely enjoyed the part where Etienne tours Anna in Paris. The story is basically about Anna and Etienne's teen-ish love but what sets it apart with any other books I've read in the past is that the book also focuses on friendship and family. The author provided background stories for each of the character. It was nice to know them all. I read the other day that there is a companion book for Anna and the French Kiss - definitely looking forward to reading that too! I highly recommend this book and I'm sure your money is well-spent on this one.

Ratings: see review below

Note: I received a review copy of this book free from BookLookBloggers. The review posted below is based on my personal thoughts while reading the book.

My thoughts:

Siren's Fury is the second book to the Storm Siren Trilogy.  Unfortunately, I don't read a book series out of sequence because I hate not knowing the back story of each and every character. Since I was the one who picked this out from the publisher's website, I had to read it. So I tried, but only 'til the first quarter. I just can't push myself in reading further as I cannot connect with any of the character. Although this is a DNF, I am not rating Siren's Fury for now. Will read again after reading book 1, which is already in my wish list.

About the book:

“I thrust my hand toward the sky as my voice begs the Elemental inside me to waken and rise. But it’s no use. The curse I’ve spent my entire life abhorring—the thing I trained so hard to control—no longer exists.”

Nym risked her life to save Faelen, her homeland, from a losing war, only to discover that the shapeshifter Draewulf has stolen everything she holds dear. But when the repulsive monster robs Nym of her storm-summoning abilities as well, the beautiful Elemental realizes her war is only just beginning.

Now powerless to control the elements that once emboldened her, Nym stows away on an airship traveling to the metallic kingdom of Bron. She must stop Draewulf. But the horrors he’s brought to life and the secrets of Bron are more than Nym bargained for. Then the disturbing Lord Myles tempts her with new powers that could destroy the monster, and Nym must decide whether she can compromise in the name of good even if it costs her very soul.

As she navigates the stark industrial cityscape of Bron, Nym is faced with an impossible choice: change the future with one slice of a blade . . . or sacrifice the entire kingdom for the one thing her heart just can’t let go.

Recommended Read: Far Horizons by Kate Hewitt

Far Horizons
Book One of The Emigrants Trilogy
by Kate Hewitt

Amazon Ratings: 5-star 43%

About the book:

The Highlands of Scotland, 1819: On the eve of his departure for the New World, Allan MacDougall asks his beloved Harriet to wait for his return, when he will be established and able to marry her. When his father discovers his intent he insists it is dishonourable, and so Allan must free Harriet from her promise even as he vows to remain faithful himself. Through years of hardship, heartache, tragedy, and betrayal, Allan and Harriet cling to the love that first brought them together--yet it is the treacherous doubts of their own hearts that could prove to be their undoing, and drive them farther apart than ever.

Far Horizons is a sweeping saga of that will take you from the Highlands of Scotland to the untamed Canadian wilderness and the bustling streets of Boston. Based on actual events, it celebrates the strength of a promise and the enduring power of love. Written by USA Today bestselling author Kate Hewitt, and Book One of The Emigrants Trilogy.

Book Review (originally posted on June 2012)

Far Horizons is the first book to The Emigrants Trilogy. The book is about the love story of Allan MacDougal and Harriet Campbell. The premise of the story is based on true events while all other are just tales the author wove to make it more appealing for the readers. Allan and Harriet (ancestors of the author) got engaged just hours before Allan's family sailed from Scotland to Canada to start a new life. Allan's father, Sandy MacDougal thought it was dishonorable for Allan to ask Harriet to wait for him so Sandy insisted that Allan set Harriet free. Allan then returned Harriet's letters when he's already at the port waiting for their ship to Canada. This made Harriet feel Allan is not sure of his feelings for her. What would you do if your significant other went away, promised to return and marry you but you received nothing from him/her for years. No calls, no letters, nothing that would assure you that someone is still keeping the promise he/she made the last time you talked?

If you are in an LDR (long distance romance) situation, this book is totally relatable. I've been in that situation decades ago and it was that hard. It was hard to wait for someone who's oceans away. It was even harder for Allan and Harriet because they were just not oceans away, imagine LDR without phones? Letters can only be sent through a ship that sails for months. Letters are delivered and can only be picked-up in ports? Reading this book made my heart ache, every page is truly heart breaking especially the first quarter of the story.  I loved how the author described Scotland and Canada in 1819. The settings of the story surely enticed me to finish the book quickly.

Far Horizons is a great historical romance novel, I look forward to reading the second book. Highly recommended for book readers looking for a great series to start.

Books on sale for $0.99 today until December 25!! Expedition series by Jake Taylor

Some call them extraterrestrials, others call them Gods. This is their story.
After Sir Henry Johnston falls into a volcanic crater, two warriors from another world come to his rescue; they manage to keep him alive. These two warriors, a female named Suchja and a male named Dran, are Tesgans who claim to be here protecting the Earth and all its inhabitants, including plants and animals, on behalf of Annur’s Empire.
Sir Henry questions their claims but he can’t do much more. He is nearly comatose. As he fell, he ordered his dog, Star, to go for help but it will take the rescuers more than four days to reach him. In the meantime, after answering several of his questions, Suchja tells Sir Henry to consider reading or listening to the Expedition Reports because that’s where he can find most of the answers he seeks. Thus begins a most amazing saga: How these beings got here, how they made us, how they transformed us, how they continue to influence us, and how they are protecting us from enemies that wish to do us harm.
It includes 35 Illustrations in full color; it is also available in Spanish.

Some call them extraterrestrials, others call them Gods. This is their story.

Sir Henry Johnston finds out that the cadets did not only encounter enemies of Annur’s Empire during this, the Second Expedition, but that they also had to confront the evil remnants of a so called “parallel civilization.” He also finds out that the acquisition of powers does not cease; it actually increases. Now the cadets and some of their companions can produce ugly skin diseases on themselves or on their enemies, by just wishing it! They can levitate, and also produce diamonds and other gems by simply squeezing regular stones with their bare hands. They really like this last power, but seldom use it. They can also transform themselves into anything they want, including water, air, vapor, dust or any kind of plant or animal.

They continue to encounter many mysteries. Gab and Alph may not be who they claim to be, and there’s a host of unresolved issues in a hidden structure that belonged to Bert Nostcal, a dear friend of Emperor Annur’s, who unfortunately disappeared eons ago. There are lots of questions inside the truncated pyramid and its burial chamber. Another big mystery is, ‘Who exactly are the Imperial Envoys, Imperial Interceptors, Kingdom Hawks and Kingdom Legionnaires?’ And to make things worse, the system refuses to answer an important question asked by Yah, the son of the Emperor!

But, not everything is a mystery or an enemy; the cadets also become acquainted with great friends of the empire. In addition, Zam makes a fantastic discovery; the cadets can advance in time!

Read along with Sir Henry and follow the incredible adventures of the cadets in the second volume of the ‘Yah and the Space Cadets’ series: “First Light / The Second Expedition.”

The Forth Expedition begins when Ada reveals to her fellow cadets that she and Erlakee will share a room at the clinic where she is receiving Pevasy treatments. Later, the cadets are informed of the objectives of the mission: Ensure that the damage suffered by AquaSoil will not impede the development of vegetation; determine the fate of its two moons, and measure the exact orbit of AquaSoil around its star.

During their trip to AquaSoil, the cadets visit Veradrix, a planet with a toxic and explosive atmosphere and many mysteries that hide puzzling messages, one said: “Listen to the fallen leaves as rustled by the breeze.”

They obtain two ‘exclusive’ powers before their next stop, which is planet Rensekal. There, they meet General Colpan and learn escape maneuvers. Colpan gives them whistles that produce Top Priority Signals.

Two major developments take place while the cadets travel to AquaSoil: First, Lieutenant-Generals Yalert and Dirah (enemies of the Empire) continue on their mission to catch the object ejected from the Audacious during a previous expedition. And second, a ‘secret’ gathering takes place where a mysterious being named Lord Uzbel reveals himself as the head of a major conspiracy against Annur’s empire. A female agent by the name of Randora will help Erlakee to create havoc on AquaSoil.

D’Nor and Kuln reveal to the cadets the existence of life-infusors and life-amplifiers onboard the Audacious that are required to seed the planet.

The cadets visit planet Tregf where they practice ways of dropping the infusors and amplifiers in preparation for doing it on AquaSoil. During their return trip the explorers run into a spaceship adrift in space.

The moment they enter the Eanono Wormhole on their way back, Lord Uzbel sends a message to Randora ordering her to start the mayhem together with Erlakee.

The cadets begin to question the reasons for their missions thinking that there will be a great struggle in the future and regret not having protected AquaSoil properly. They now think that their enemies will attack the planet; they send sentinels to keep an eye on AquaSoil. The Fourth Expedition ends when the system informs the cadets that their sentinels were cunningly deflected…

COGLING has already gained advanced praise from NY Times Bestselling author Maria V. Snyder!
“This is a fun YA Steampunk novel. It's very different than many other Steampunk stories I've read. Basic plot is Edna's brother is kidnapped by hags and replaced with a "cogling" and she's on a mission to find and rescue her brother. The world is a Victorian-era with a strict class system for the humans and for those with magic. The woman with magic are called hags and the men with magic are orges and they're not nice and are planning to change the system. I really enjoyed learning about the world and the characters are well drawn and engaging.”
